Introduction to Creative Nonfiction
This workshop is an introduction to writing Creative nonfiction. You’ll learn the unique characteristics of the form and how to use them.
You learn how to pull from real life to write stories that captivate readers and illuminate hidden truths in the human experience. You’ll receive tools to mine the details of your life to uncover creative gold.
We study how to write about your real life in styles that blend fiction’s storytelling elements with factual accuracy. We cover the use of fiction techniques such as character presentation, dialog, scene setting, and plot design to enliven your nonfiction.
In this workshop, we embrace the power of storytelling to unleash your creativity as you learn to craft unique narratives based on your real life experiences.
Focus on the Memoir
Unlike an autobiography, which is a book-length work that spans an individual's entire life, a memoir is a book-length work that typically focuses on a specific period, or events, or themes in a person’s life.
In the workshop we will discuss the types of themes, life events, developmental periods in a life, and so on that are most conducive to developing powerful memoirs that will resonate with readers.
Also, we cover topics such as the process for writing memoir and how to decide what to reveal.
Designing the container, or structure, for your memoir is also part of the workshop content.
Focus on the Personal Essay
Because not everyone wants to write a book-length work about their life, Creative Nonfiction has a door open to writing personal narrative essays.
In the workshop we cover the specifics of writing narrative style essays. This includes narrative essay structure and frameworks for shaping the telling of events from your past.
The personal narrative essay and the memoir are sister styles that belong to the same genre, much of what is necessary to craft effective memoirs is also important in the art of the personal essay. So, there is much overlap, which will be discussed as well.
